Disarmament and International Security
Director: Tarnjit Singh
Topic A: Ethics of Modern Warfare
The Disarmament and International Security (DISEC) committee will focus on the Ethical Effects of Modern Warfare. The main dilemma present here is the rise of Drone warfare, and the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and like technologies in various conflicts globally. The main questions that must be addressed in this committee are whether or not there are enough regulations currently in place to control Drone warfare, what the ethical effects of this new type of warfare are, and the sustainability of these types of weapons and their use.
Topic B: Small Arms and Light Weapons
The Disarmament and International Security (DISEC) committee will look at the illegal trade of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) as an impediment to Sustainable Development. The illicit trade of these weapons is a global issue that has presided in many regions globally for many years, and will continue to do so if there are no new regulations and policies put into place. The illegal exchange of SALW is connected to many other conflicts, such as human trafficking, illegal drug trade, and overseas piracy, in addition to fueling many regional and international military conflicts.
