Code of Conduct

The following policy should be considered to be in effect for all IDIA-sponsored conferences, including Rutgers Model United Nations, Philadelphia Model United Nations, and Rutgers Model Congress, unless otherwise stated in conference materials. Other organizations may have different policies – you should check with the organizers of your particular conference.

Code of Conduct

There are two policies that our staff shall deal with in an immediate and proscribed manner, in accordance with the laws of the United States and the state of New Jersey.

1) The use and/or possession of narcotic drugs is strictly prohibited under federal and state law. Therefore, any delegate found possessing or using an illegal substance shall be reported to the New Brunswick Police Department and the school’s faculty advisor, and immediately removed from the conference premises.

2) The legal drinking age in the state of New Jersey is twenty-one. Therefore, no delegates may possess or consume any alcoholic beverages. Any violations of this rule will result in the notification of the participant’s faculty advisor, and the student’s immediate removal from the conference.

Hotel Decorum

Delegates are expected to be quiet and professional as they travel throughout the hotel. We are not the sole occupants of the hotel, and must respect the other guests. This includes all elevators, hallways, and stairwells. Please do not linger outside of your rooms or in the hallways, as your voices carry into other guests’ rooms.

The categorization of schools into small, medium and large occurs on a floating scale based around the median size of schools attending that year’s conference. The exact distinction between large, medium, and small is made at the sole discretion of the undergraduate conference manager in consultation with the Program Director.

Dress Code

The dress code for all official functions of RUMUN is western business attire. Neither jeans nor sneakers are appropriate. Any delegate whom the staff considers to be in violation of this policy will be asked to return to their room so that they may change into appropriate attire.

Casual dress is permitted and encouraged during the social events on Saturday evening.

Sexual Harassment Policy

Objective

The Institute for Domestic and International Affairs (IDIA) is committed to providing an environment free from sexual harassment. The aim of the following policy is to prevent harassment of any kind by anyone associated with IDIA and to promote a free and welcoming environment for reporting acts of sexual harassment.

Description

Sexual harassment consists of, but is not limited to, the following actions:
Unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature;
Sexual pranks or repeated sexual teasing, jokes, or innuendo;
Touching or grabbing of a sexual nature;
Repeatedly standing too close to or brushing up against a person;
Repeatedly asking a person to socialize outside of the IDIA environment when the person has indicated he or she is not interested;
Giving gifts or leaving objects that are sexually suggestive;
Repeatedly making sexually suggestive gestures;
Making or posting sexually demeaning or offensive pictures, cartoons or other materials in the IDIA environment;
External, unwelcome conduct of a sexual nature that affects the IDIA environment.

IDIA Responsibilities

All IDIA members are responsible for helping ensure that our environment is kept free from sexual harassment. If IDIA receives an allegation of sexual harassment, or has reason to believe sexual harassment is occurring, the organization will take the necessary steps to ensure that the matter is promptly investigated and addressed. If the allegation is determined to be credible, the organization will take immediate and effective measures to end the unwelcome behavior.

Victim Responsibilities

If you feel you have been a victim of sexual harassment, report the behavior to the Secretary-General, Conference Manager or to the IDIA Board of Directors. If you have witnessed sexual harassment, you also are urged to report the incident to the proper authority so that prompt action may be taken. All complaints will be treated seriously, kept as confidential as possible and investigated fully. IDIA expressly forbids any retaliation against victims for reporting sexual harassment.

Investigation Procedures

Those who believe they have been a victim of sexual harassment should report the behavior to the Secretary-General, Conference Manager or to the IDIA Board of Directors. Once a complaint has been received, the Conference Manager will investigate the complaint as soon as possible. This investigation will include privately interviewing the accused, the accuser and potential witnesses as well as recording interviews and documenting evidence. If the investigation by the Conference Manager reveals that an act of sexual harassment has occurred, the involved parties will be notified and a type of disciplinary action will be decided upon. Depending on the gravity of the charges, punishment can include but is not limited to:
Verbal reprimand;
Removal from IDIA environment;
Reporting behavior to appropriate school officials;
Police involvement.

Concluding Statements

Sexual harassment is a serious offense that IDIA and its Board of Directors takes seriously. If you have any questions regarding the policies laid forth, please contact the Secretary-General, Conference Manager or Board of Directors.
