IDIA presents

Rutgers Model Congress 2020

Important COVID-19 Update: Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and out of an abundance of concern for the safety of our participants and staff, Rutgers Model Congress has been postponed until the Spring of 2021. We look forward to seeing you then for another amazing RMC!

Welcome to RMC!

RUMUN 2020 will take place from April 2 - 5.

Rutgers Model Congress is a realistic simulation of actual United States congress.  At RMC, students from across the country convene for four days and three nights to debate the same topics that elected officials grapple with on a daily basis. By representing states and party members of their choice, students participate in a variety of congressional and specialized committees.

RMC also includes simulations designed to mimic non-Congressional agencies like the Supreme Court, West Wing, and even special historical committees set during interesting moments from the past.

In each House and Senate committee, students represent the interests of their state, their party, their country, and their own conscience by debating the topics on the agenda. Together with their colleagues, students collectively develop bills, joint resolutions, and amendments in committee that best serve the interests of their constituents by speaking through formal and informal debate and forging compromises. Along with debating the topics on the provisional agenda, students also experience the influence of lobbyists in their legislative duties, and are faced with a variety of realistic crisis simulations throughout the weekend.

Students participating in the Supreme Court render written decisions on actual cases after hours of intense debate, based on available evidence and oral arguments. In the National Security Council, students are challenged to decide the proper course of action when faced with real-world crises and attacks on the economic, social, and geo-political security of the United States.

Over the course of RMC, students actively participate in more than twenty hours of formal and informal debate. At the conclusion of the conference, students convene to celebrate the success of their deliberations at an awards ceremony where participants are recognized for their efforts.

From the Executive Director

Welcome to Rutgers Model Congress 2020! This unique four-day experience will be held from April 2-5 at the Hyatt Regency in downtown New Brunswick, New Jersey.

RMC 2020 is one of the premier Model Congress conferences for giving delegates an experience in domestic affairs that spans a wide variety of committee forms and topics. The issues that are discussed and the delegations involved will all challenge the delegates to think beyond party lines and beyond what has been done in the past. One thing that is certain is that there is always room to improve our national policies and to create the change that we wish to see in our nation. Our directors have been working tirelessly to ensure that the delegates are equipped to achieve exactly that. Eighteen directors have stepped up to take on the role of being educators and guides for the delegates in a year-long process, each having their own vision for how the United States can improve. Whether the committees are tackling issues such as “Regulation of Agrochemicals” or “Managing Public Debt,” they will empower the delegates to think about these topics in a manner that they likely have not before and help them to create lasting resolutions to some of the country’s most challenging issues.
